10 Steps to a Great Life! By Taylor Hartman, PhD

Introduction

When I decided to become a psychologist 35 years ago, all I wanted to do was help people live better lives. I would have traveled anywhere to begin my practice. Throughout my professional life, I have come to realize that most people don’t find life to be easy. They struggle just to survive and would welcome a better map on how to navigate life if they could find it—if they could trust it.

I have seen the difference my work makes when people apply the principles I teach. They are literally transformed in their thinking and their behavior in a way that changes their quality of life. “Life is difficult,” as Scott Peck once wrote so eloquently in his remarkable book, The Road Less Traveled. And it is! But it can also be exciting, abundant, and rewarding.

When I look at a person today, after so many years of working with individuals, I can see immediately whether his or her life makes sense or not. It’s not any different for me with mental health than it is for a fitness trainer who first engages a client at the gym. There are certain clues you look for in assessing life fitness that always give an accurate reading on whether or not someone makes sense.

It’s one thing if someone has no interest in figuring life out. It’s something all together more tragic when that person wants to understand his or her human condition but lacks a method to do so. I am committed to giving you what I spent over 35 years developing to give my patients. If you will apply these principles, I promise you success in living a more abundant life. Try me. Commit to a period of 6 months and apply the principles I teach you. You will be amazed at your results. And what we are talking about here are results—not nice words, but legitimate evidence that your life is better.

We love the top ten lists of late night TV, so we’ll begin with my top ten list of what makes for a great life. Once you have learned and applied my ten strategies to your everyday life, you will never see yourself or others the same again. Your life will be forever changed! And it all begins by taking the Color Code Personality Test. This profile will tell you more about who you were innately born to be than any other single document you will ever read. If you have not yet taken the personality test, I recommend that you take it now before you begin.

Step 1: Increase Your Self-Awareness

At the height of Greek civilization, Socrates became deeply concerned about the superficiality of his people. Despite knowing life at a loftiness never before experienced by mankind, Socrates saw the masses living in ignorance and missing the power of self-awareness. He said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” It’s true! Perhaps the most significant step people can take is to look inside and figure out what they were born to become. Knowing yourself gives you important clues as to what will matter in your life.

Your core color is far more than simply a set of behavioral traits, which other personality tests could provide you. It takes you to your “driving core motive” in life. It tells you what matters most to you. Your driving core motive is like breathing. Without it, you will never feel truly alive. When you discover your driving core motive, it feels like coming home—safe, comfortable, and legitimate.

All of your life, people will try to tell you that you must be someone other than who you were born to be. The foundation of a healthy life is built by knowing yourself at your very core. You can add any dimension you like once your driving core motive is established. Being true to yourself means you put your foundation in place (driving core motive) and then add structure to it.

What did the Color Code Personality Test tell you about your driving core motive? Are you driven by Power (Red), Intimacy (Blue), Peace (White), or Fun (Yellow)? You will find that this awareness is momentous in establishing a firm foundation for your life. If your driving core motive is Fun (Yellow) but you have been challenged by your parents to make it Power (Red), you are headed for a miserable life. You can never build a legitimate life on a lie. You must lay a solid foundation and forever nurture it—always value and commit to it. Do not take this awareness lightly.

People often gloss over this powerful piece of self-awareness with comments like “That’s nice to know,” when they should be pondering much more genuinely how they can engage and support their driving core motive such that their life makes sense and feels congruent.

Study what your driving core motive means. Do things every day to support what makes you happy and feel personally rewarded. Do not take your driving core motive for granted. This is your life foundation and something you must be vigilant about before anything else. People will often negate you or dismiss your relevance when they don’t understand the significance of who you really are at your core. Stand firm in protecting what is at your core essence because it frees you to be your best self.

The healthiest people always find time to do what makes them happy, and they know what makes them happy. Your Color Code results tell you what makes you happy. Now, commit to doing something everyday that fits your driving core motive. If you refuse to do so, you are sentencing yourself to a limited life. Don’t wait for others to meet your core expectations. That is your job. It’s your life—not theirs. Now go wrap your arms around it—examine it—embrace it—live it limitlessly!

The first step in life is to “get you.” Get your strengths, limitations, gifts, inner struggles. Understand your driving core motive and match it with doing things every day that fit its expectations. This is your foundation. Everyday do things that engage, support, and develop your driving core motive. Everything else will make more sense if you remain true to your personal foundation.
